Rants About NTU Elective Selection

This is really annoying me.

Let me give you a brief overview.

Basically, NTU students are required to take some "general electives" subject that is out of the scope of their school.

Like if you're studying engineering, you have to study some subject from business, science, arts, etc... etc...

Fine. Widen your horizons and everything. I'm totally supportive of it.

Now, obviously I want to pick something that I think is useful, or I'm interested in. But since I'm NOT from that particular field/school, I wouldn't know much (if any) about the elective.

I have to pick like ONE elective out of a dozen choices given to me. How do I pick? There is barely any information available about what each electives are.

And this is the main issue that I want to address here.

The only place available is a webpage which give a SHORT description (about 5 lines) of what each elective is. And sometimes, the description is so worthless you might as well forget about drawing any useful information from it.

Give you an example... Like, say I'm interested in this module "GAME DESIGN". So I read up about it.

"Game Design Workshop I focuses on the elements of gaming. How do narrative, characterization, & level design play a role in the gaming experience? What elements found in causal games are common to most of our daily interactive experiences? We will address these issues through the creation of causal games. "

...

That's it.

WTF? Are you kidding me? What good use is that?

It looks like they just cut and paste 2 lines from the first chapter of that module and paste it as the description.

So, is it about programming? Or is it drawing stuffs? Create using what? Is it more theory or practical? How many hours practical/lecture a week?

Bottom line: That description is a worthless piece of crap.

It doesn't tell you the workload, the assessment criteria, what software (if any) that you'll be using, whether it is group or individual, and all the useful information.

And GUESS WHAT.

That is the ONLY piece of information you'll be able to find about each elective.

Yes - A short, worthless piece of garbage text.

And this 5 lines of text will determine your fate for the whole semester.

So, unless you've got some seniors or friends who have taken the module before, there's basically NO WAY you can find out more about what the subject is about.

Tell me what good is it that they only give you this information AFTER you have registered for the subject, during the first lesson.

What's the point?

So, how do you save yourself the headache?

Next time, just throw a dice and randomly pick one.

And pray that you've chosen something good.

I believe this is why the popular modules continue to be so popular year after year. And the less popular ones start to fade into oblivion.

You know why? Because it is a risk to take the lesser-known modules. There is so little information available about it that it becomes a big risk to take it.

Holiday Update: It's Time To Get Moving Again

Alright!

Now that the Kindergarten is forever in the past...

It's time to get myself moving and start doing things again.

Gonna start planning the new semester timetable, and prepare for the dreaded opening of the "hell gates" (aka STARS system)...

But I'm sure it's going to much better this time round...

Beginning To Understand

Note: This post is not about the Kindergarten

Many things in this world are only as important (or unimportant) as we make them out to be.

The more we focus on something, the more important it becomes.

Like example... When you're schooling, the most important things to you are the assignments, the exams, etc...

When you're in the army, the only thing you care about is when you're going to go home, when you're going to ORD...

...

Sometimes, I think this trip back to the past may actually be a good thing after all.

I did some soul searching, and it seems like I've forgotten how the simplest things were able to make me happy.

It's like a reminder to me, a reminder about how fortunate I am right now.

Being misunderstood? Maligned by people? Blamed for something I haven't done?

I've been through them all during those days, and it was much worse. During those times, you can't even stand up for yourself. Because it isn't really an environment that allow you to do that.

I can stand up for myself now.

I'm not under anyone control anymore.

So...

It's time to get over it.

It's time to forgive, to let go...

Graduation Outing!

15th June

Actually was planning to just relax at home the whole day...

Woke up at like 10am... login onto MSN, then immediately received a message from Mr Fish asking If I wanted to go Malaysia.

He actually asked me this the previous week, but I just told him that my passport has expired. Turned out, he just discover that his passport has expired as well... -_-

So OK... got people company me... so we went down to ICA together.

Long story short, we were stalled there for a LONG time... (Mine was done in like 5 minutes, Yat Yat one took like 3 hours)

Met up with YZ while we were there... and YZ brought me to see someone special...

Mr. Ah Cheng! (The Old Driver)

Surprised! Guess what... He's already married and with 1 child already!!! Initially I still don't believe it when YZ told me that...

It's been barely 2 years and things have changed so much. He's now the boss of a hawker stall there with his Dad~

Anyway, the long delay caused YZ to miss his lunch as well... Haha. We originally planned to meet at Kranji at 2:30pm... In the end, we reached there at almost 4... -_-

As for the trip, nothing much to say lah...

Don't ask me about the people who went... I'm not the organizer.

I didn't even know who's going beforehand.

Mr Fish invited me and I just went. ^_^

Yeah... my big day. Brought a lot of food back for the guys...



I thought I made a safe getaway (take it on the lam!)... but I was setup by stupid Kenny...

In the end, I was drenched in water...

Went out with few of the guys to KBOX after that.

And it was a real "eye-opener" for all of us.

Maybe it's because I haven't visit a KBOX for a long time (I've found much cheaper alternative...)

But this one is really worth it. The screen is freaking huge! (42 inch above I think)

Everything is touchscreen.

There's games to play on the "control kiosk"... (In fact, ZJ seems more interested in the games then the mic, LOL!)

There are special effects like "appulse, cheers" that you can play when you're singing.

$10 Nett for each person.

2pm to 7pm...

Tell me any other place where you can sing for 5 HOURS for $10 per person in this kind of environment...

Final Farewell 4 - The Things I'll Miss

Alright, this is the last song in this "Final Farewell" series. It's the longest song (in terms of amount of lyrics) I ever attempted and took one of the longest "production cycle" ever.

Started working on it since the day I first came back, and it has since underwent several revision...

Drag Me To Hell

WOW!

This is a freaking AWESOME show!

Without a doubt the best "angmoh" horror movie I've ever seen. I didn't know the westerners could create such a high standard horror flick. Definitely one of the best horror movie I've seen in recent years...

It's a horror movie with a "comedic effect". Yeah. I know most people would be turned off immediately upon hearing that. But trust me, it's done so well that I believe it has broken through the "comedy + horror = bad movie" stereotype.

It is far from being the scariest horror, but it is definitely one of the most entertaining. Think of it as like "90% horror with 10% comedic".

Don't be fooled though. This film is still mainly horror, and it WILL still scare the crap out of you.

It is very hard to put it into words, but this movie can make you tremble while you're laughing, startle you while you're still laughing at the previous joke. It's that awesome.

The story picks up almost immediately from the start...

Within 10 minutes you are introduced to all the major characters and you feel the connection with the main character; her problems, her background, etc...

And then...

Everything starts. And once it starts, it never stops till the credit rolls...

The sound effects are great (in fact, it's what make this movie so good). The plot is one of the better ones (mythology in modern setting) for a horror genre. You can connect immediately with the characters and the plot just flows very well.

There's really almost nothing I can criticize about it.

Some parts will really make you go "WTH" though. Like... mysterious house... all the spooky stuff... scary music... and then suddenly it converts to an entirely different setting. And the next moment you are treated with some very gory "eye-candy"...

You either like it or you don't. Some people won't like the mythology mixed with modern setting plot either...

Bottom line, I really enjoyed the entire 100 minutes of this film.

Highly recommend it to everyone!!!

Note: I may have given this movie a little too high, but this is perhaps due to my incredible experience at the cinema. All the audience were entirely into the movie, and everyone was like screaming/laughing together. So it was really great. So, it really can be a little bias.

Rating: 4.5 / 5
(Ups for the breakthrough, Horror mix Comedy awesomeness in a way I never thought possible.)

7th Eclipse 5th Year - Full Scale War begins... The 3 routes into Kay Kingdom came under heavy fire..

7th Eclipse 10th Year - Chief Kingfisher left the Kay Knights... replaced by Chief Quadz. General Cannibal became possessed by a deadly demon and became the greatest evil in the land...

Blood The Last Vampire

Please, don't waste your money on this piece of thrash...

The storyline is extremely predictable, weak, fails to connect, is illogical, and plain sucks.

The graphics sucks. The blood looks more like "red blobs" of bubbles or something. The CGI is fake looking and really out of place.

The fighting scenes is average (and that's being on the lenient side). The character actions makes no sense.

Like example, if the main character and her master join forces, they would have wiped out all the enemies. Why the hell would they fight one by one?

If the "demon" can fly in the first place, why does it have to run everywhere? Why can't it just fly out to the sea?

It's ridiculous. Some scenes which are suppose to be "emotional" makes me feel like laughing.

The final boss fight started off pretty decently, but turned out to be a total joke. The "twist" at the end is so predictable it makes me wanna cry. I expected something more, but that is it.

This is one of the worst movie I've seen in a while.

Stay far away.

Life At The New Kindergarten

Wow... so fast... next week will be my last full week already.

Even though it's kinda boring (每天还是一样的东西)... I've started to enjoy "interacting" with the new guys there. Haha.

It's very interesting to go in there as a "neutral party" and listen to them. And some of them are very willing to share with me about their unhappiness...

Like... which "old bird" they don't like, who and who do what pattern... listen to their complains about various things and people... LOL. It's quite entertaining sometimes.

Sometimes I think I talk with them more than I do with the "old birds" I know... Haha.

Anyway... I really believe there's some sort of "Kindergarten Curse" here. Every batch there will be such a case...

Anyway... there's new Red Dragon, new Wei Hao, etc... It's like history repeating itself all over again.

I feel that I'm seeing a "replica" of these people in the New Kindergarten... it's really... dot dot dot...

Of course, I also take the chance to share with them how life's like in the "good old days". How the excursions were like, how the Kindergarten slowly evolved and changed into what it is today...

Yeah... at least keep the "heritage" and "legacy" of this place alive... don't let it be lost forever.

Seriously, I feel that they lead a better live now compared to the olden days...

Oh, and of course!

I couldn't resist sharing those "old classic jokes" with them again... LOL! Make them cold...

But cannot have people like Yat Yat and Kenny around... cause they still remember them...

Like I will randomly find one "new bird" and tell him this...

You know why "Yet" so skinny or not... cause last time everytime feed dog we ask "Hey, want to feed the dogs already or not"... Then they will say "Don't feed yet"...

Well anyway...

Some interesting "events" I participated in includes...

- Something to do with Tan Wei Kang... OMG... He is badly traumatize by this incident. Don't ever mention "sloppy" in front of him again.

- Got to see the VP took the latest batch for "training session"... I can only describe it as "extremely entertaining"... but it also pain my heart at the same time. It pains my heart to see how badly the quality of the students have deteriorate... -_-

- Santa Claus Father: This is one of the most... bizarre happening ever. In ALL my times here, this one tops the list.

- On "external attachment" outside of the Kindergarten... It's nice to get in touch with Photoshop and stuffs again...
