Don't Make Ridiculous Comment On Important Matters

Sometimes, I think that if you don't know WTF is going on, you should just shut the hell up.

Example, someone tells you something that is of great importance to him. He may be asking you for your opinion, or maybe he just wants to share his plans/experience.

If you have no idea what is going on, then you could say something like...

"I'm not sure about this. Maybe you should ask someone that's more familiar with this"

or simply just encourage & support him. Or at the very least, just listen to what he have to say and keep quiet.

Don't make negative comments or be a wet blanket. Don't say things like "You will fail" or "There is no way that could happen" or "I will definitely stop you from doing that."

It's really hurtful for the person, especially when that matter is important to him but irrelevant to you.

Games for 2008

It has been a long time since I played any "major game". Er... I shall classify that as a retail game that actually comes with a box and CD-ROM. The last one I played was Medieval 2 Total War.

Haven't been too interested in much of the crap that came out in 2007 (or maybe it's just due to personal reasons), so I've been into a lot of online games. Viwawa being one of them, yeah.

Been playing a number of flash, "fight and grow" games from various online portal. If you got a few hours to waste, I strongly recommend the Swords & Sandals series, and also the Sinjid Battle Arena series.

Basically, you start off with a customizable character and build him up, battling increasingly difficult enemies. As you gain levels, you can buy items, skills and further customize his stats. The goal of course is to see how far you can go before you fall... Be warned, they can be very addictive.

Alright, back to the "major game". I'll list the 3 Major ones I'm looking forward to in 2008.

1. Spore - They said it's coming out this year. Well...hopefully. Been following the development of this game for 3 years, and I'm definitely hyped for the release.

2. Empire Total War - It's Total War with ships! Highly doubt it'll be out this year though.

3. Demi God - And this one that I want to introduce since it's the most "ulu" of all. I was clicking around the game sites until I read about this game...

To summarized:

A game inspired by DOTA!

WOW.

In case you didn't know, I'm quite a big fan of DOTA. In fact, I've been playing it since "O" Levels. That's like, 5 years? From the Original map on WC3 Reign of Chaos to its current form, I've been playing it on and off.

And I always thought the game concept can stand on its own, on its own as a single, commercial game. It didn't have to be a "custom map in Warcraft III". It can be a full fledge game. I'm surprised they took this long to realize this. Saying DOTA is what is keeping Warcraft III alive today is not an understatement.

If you're interested, here's the gamespy preview to this game.

"Demigod, a full-featured RTS-hybrid inspired by the popular Warcraft III custom map Defense of the Ancients -- usually "DotA" for short. "

"It's a little ironic that one of the most refreshing RTS games to emerge this year is heavily based on a custom map that's been in heavy circulation for a good long time... is gearing up for release in the fourth quarter of this year."

Mahjong, Wahjong!

This post describes how I transformed from a total newbie in Mahjong to become a world renowned self proclaim expert known as the "God of Mahjong" (麻将大侠), aka "King of Self-Draw" (自模天王).

...

From the start, I have no interest in Mahjong whatsoever, even though all my siblings know how to play it. I've probably tried to learn it during various point in my life, but mostly gave up due to its "immense difficulty". I simply wasn't able to comprehend what the whole game is all about.

Then, in around 2002 to 2003 period came the release of what I remember as the "first mahjong movie" I saw: 呖咕呖咕新年财

Starring Andy Lau and Gigi Leung, it was repeatedly telecast over the years so many times I've lost count. It's probably one of the first few Mahjong movies that feature something known as "making friends with the tiles". Treating the tiles as some kind of living spirits, and how your "relationship" with the tiles can win you the game.

It's the first movie that actually made me want to learn Mahjong, but I never really did...

Until I brought this game.

I learnt the most basics of Mahjong from this game, cause it is super newbie friendly. You only need to know "4 melds + 1 pair" win the game. EVERYTHING else is automated for you in the game. Basically, it's more like waiting for buttons to pop up. When you can eat, the button will light up. When you can game, the button will light up. All the winnings are automated for you too.

I didn't know how to make ANY special hands, and I don't understand how they calculate the tai. I don't even know how the whole game works. I just "look at my hand, discard those that doesn't match, and wait for buttons to pop up". That is it.

It's a great game, but eventually I got bored of it (once I can memorize all the things the characters say).

...

Subsequently later, during a Poly Chalet, I was "forced" into playing Mahjong, this time for real (probably for the first time in my life). Again, I used all the knowledge (which was pretty limited) from the game to play. And of course I had to keep consulting the people around.

Playing Mahjong in real life is TOTALLY different from the game. No buttons will light up for you to press! -_-

Basically, you have to call the 'pong' and the 'chow' and the 'hu' yourself. You have to react to it in real time. You got to remember to draw and discard tile or risk getting a "small husband"...

You also got to deal with stuff like throwing the dice and calculating the tile deck. And then how you have to "jump a tile" at the end. It's something I still don't understand to this date. And then of course you have to learn about the flowers, the animals, the dealer and the prevailing wind, etc... all of which I didn't learn until much later.

...

My interests in Mahjong died after that. I did play various online Mahjong games like the ones from Yahoo and some freeware version, but it didn't last very long. Those version were just not that impressive, often lacking in graphics, game-play or implementation.

After that, I basically never touch Mahjong again...

It popped up in the Viwawa website, but I didn't feel like learning everything from start. (I've forgotten like 90% by then) I feel more interested in the daidee game...

...

Until recently...

In fact, just a few weeks ago...

When I saw the telecast of...

These are the 2 movies that "reignited" my interests in Mahjong again.

And this time I'm quite determine to master it. Or at least, be able to play it at a decent level.

...

I've been playing the Viwawa Wahjong for these past week or so.

Anyone want to get thrash by me, The God Of Mahjong, feel free to sign up for an account. I will welcome any challengers.

Wahahahahahaha...

A Martial Art Story...

Was walking around when I saw this Chinese martial art novel (武侠小说) on the ground...

I'm a fan of martial art stories, and this novel was quite an interesting read. There's not much storyline to it, but I'll list the characters in the stories...

Its starts out with a phrase that is widely circulated in the Marital Art World...

Sounds a lot like Dragon Sabre Heavenly Sword It speaks of 2 legendary martial artists whose skills are unmatched throughout the lands...

Like most typical Martial Art Stories, this one describes the struggle between the good and evil sects in Central Plains (中原).

First, the Imperial Court - ruled by Dowager together with the Empress, and the 7 princesses of the Royal Family.

In the Evil Realm, we have the Demon Sect (魔教)...

The Demon Emperor practices the Blood Sucking Skill (吸血大法) that will cause him to go into the frenzy, killing everyone in sight. He feasts on the innocents whenever he wants, and will not stop until his thirst for blood is satisfied. With the assistance of his 3 siblings as the Heavenly Guardians, it will not be long before he launches his plan to attack the righteous realm...

魔教
(Demon Emperor) -

On the righteous side, we have the 4 Elders together with the Grand Elder to uphold justice and order. In addition, The elders each have a disciple that vow to protect the righteous realm...

(4 Great Elders):

(4 Heroic Disciples):

In addition, there are numerous small tribes & school scattered around the central plains... Some of the more well known ones are listed below...

The Black Mountains School - Living in the black mountains, their motive are unknown..

The Cowardly Tribe - A group of cowardly people that will run away at the first sign of danger.

The Crazy Faction - Their actions are unpredictable, and are neither good nor evil...

Other famous pugilist in the world includes...

其他
江湖第一采花大盗 (Pugilist World No.1 Rapist)- 等你死

It's definitely interesting to read. You might want to try your luck at the local library if you're a fan of martial art novels.

University News...

Feb 13, 2008
NTU to raise tuition fees by 4%

UNDERGRADUATE tuition fees at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are going up.

Incoming students in the new academic year will have to pay an annual fee of $6,360 up about 4 percentage points from $6,100 last year, NTU said in a press release on Wednesday.

There will also be greater differentiation in tuition fees between Singapore citizens, permanent residents (PRs) and foreign students. Foreign students on a tuition grant bond will pay 50 per cent more, or $9,540, while PRs on a tuition grant bond will pay 10 per cent more, or $7,000. Foreign students and PRs not on a tuition grant bond will pay $23,320.

NTU said the increase was due to higher 'manpower and operating costs'.

The new fees will be maintained at the same level during the course of the students' study. This is part of NTU's cohort-based approach to setting undergraduate tuition fees where the fees are set at the start of the students' course of study and maintained at the same level throughout the course of their study.

NTU said that this is to facilitate 'better financial planning for students by setting out a predictable fee schedule for the duration of their education at NTU'. The last time the university raised its fees was in 2006 when tuition fees went up by three per cent.

Current students and returning National Servicemen will not be affected by the increase and will continue to pay tuition fees based on the year they were offered a place at the University.

Declan Galbraith

Almost 6 years ago... when this "little boy" was just 10 years old, he released his first single - Tell Me Why.

...

Note that this is coming from someone that seldom listen to English songs.

...

I was totally blown away when I saw this video and heard this song for the first time. The lyrics are meaningful, and the whole song is just powerful and emotional. His voice is incredible for a 10 year old. Actually, it is incredible no matter what age it's coming from.

Introducing Declan Galbraith

In my dream children sing a song of love for every boy and girl
The sky is blue and fields are green and laughter is the language of the world
Then I wake and all I see is a world full of people in need

Tell me why (why) does it have to be like this?
Tell me why (why) is there something I have missed?
Tell me why (why) cos I don't understand.
When so many need somebody we don't give a helping hand.
Tell me why?

Everyday I ask myself what will I have to do to be a man?
Do I have to stand and fight to prove to everybody who I am?
Is that what my life is for to waste in a world full of war?

Tell me why (why) does it have to be like this?
Tell me why (why) is there something I have missed?
Tell me why (why) cos I don't understand.
When so many need somebody we don't give a helping hand.
Tell me why?

(children) tell me why? (declan) tell me why?
(children) tell me why? (declan) tell me why?
(together) just tell me why, why, why?

Tell me why (why) does it have to be like this?
Tell me why (why) is there something I have missed?
Tell me why (why) cos I don't understand.
When so many need somebody we don't give a helping hand.

Tell me why (why, why, does the tiger run)
Tell me why (why why do we shoot the gun)
Tell me why (why, why do we never learn)
Can someone tell us why we let the forest burn?

(why, why do we say we care)
Tell me why (why, why do we stand and stare)
Tell me why (why, why do the dolphins cry)
Can some one tell us why we let the ocean die ?

(why, why if we're all the same)
tell me why (why, why do we pass the blame)
tell me why (why, why does it never end)
can some one tell us why we cannot just be friends?

I Want To Be Happy...

Yeh... it's the Lunar New Year. A brand new year...

And...

Geez... my life is a never-ending torture...

Sian ah...

Nowadays (actually, it's been for some time), I've been spending a lot of money. A lot more then I wanted.

Not to extend that I got into debt or what lah, it's still well within my means. It's just that I saved a lot less compared to the past in terms of percentage (income vs savings). For example, in the past I might spend $50 out of $200 income. Now, I spend like $300 out of $500 income.

Last time, I would hardly buy anything above $200. But for the past one year, I've brought items way beyond this price range several times. The computer parts, then the LCD monitor, then the handphone..

By the way, I never regret buying the things above. They're really good purchase. ^_^

But I brought some other things like the Bluetooth headset, some mini-clip speakers, mp3 player, etc... that wasn't really necessary. And 500GB HDD, external HDD, computer casing... Luckily I "forcefully stopped" myself quite a few times... else I think I would have brought even more.

I even thought of selling my newly brought LCD monitor to upgrade to an even bigger one... And I was tempted to get some 5.1 mega speakers. I don't think I can ever satisfy my hunger to buy more gadgets and more upgrades... I don't seem to have this problem in the past.

It's not just those big stuffs. Daily things like food and transport, I'm also not as "giam" as before. I guess I'm splurging money on luxury like taking cabs way too often (I reduced it dramatically after the fare hike though).

I thought I could make myself happier with all these things. But alas...

Money cannot buy you true happiness. All these items are just like "temporary illusions"... to blind the truth that I'm in a very bad state. That my life is in debris. The moment that you get your hand on your new prize, you feel so "high". It lasts for a while, maybe a few days. Once you get over it, the happiness that you draw from it vanishes.

I've heard it many times before but I didn't believe it until now - Money can't buy you true happiness.*

I feel that I'm buying/spending money on all these things to distract myself from the pain... Hope I can cut down a bit on the spendings this year.

* This statement does not apply if you have an infinite or near-infinite amount of money.
