CS Week...

Finally had the chance to take a day off... to sleep the whole day. The past few days was really busy... fallen sick again. Haiz... always fall sick when I get consecutive sleepless nights.

First, the Sunday OD. That was one of my angriest OD in history. Fuming mad I felt like killing someone. So angry I actually bleed. Had about 2 hours of sleep the whole night.

Monday, went to have an haircut. Reach home about 2pm already. Slept just 2 hours and went back... And due to the environment I wasn't able to get any sleep. Fall asleep at 2am.

Tuesday, woke up at 6am. And begin a long, exhausting day. Reached home past midnight after 18 hours.

A little calculation, I slept less than 10 hours over 3 days.

Anyway I went to see a doctor (and wasted my day off, great) yet again... got medicine for flu, cough, throat inflammation. Rejected the MC because I'm heading to the Joyless Lands tomorrow. February will probably be the toughest month in history. I don't know how the hell I'm going to pay back the unfortunate soul if I skip tomorrow's "trip".

Anyway... CS was pretty fun. Even though I couldn't enjoy it to the fullest due to my condition. It's a test of teamwork and coordination in addition to individual skill. Team with Kenrick, JS, Wei Hao and Ah Soh. Soh is really sharp-shooter... wasted he come to team 3. Haha.

Night-time was crazy - couldn't even see anything. In the end I just gave up with the aiming crap and try to 'agar-agar' using the laser. I think you need a perfect score in the day to get the money. Even though we didn't perform very well, we're still among the top teams. 3 cheers to all. This will be the first CS, and the last CS for us all.

Well... now, I'm just hoping that the medicine will cure me in time for tomorrow.

Better have an early night.

Isn't it refreshing sometimes to listen to females singing male artists songs? It's a totally different "feel"

Evolution of the MRT

SINGAPORE: The government has unveiled more changes to the country's land transport system.

In the second of three major announcements, after more than a year-long review, Transport Minister Raymond Lim said rail lines will double by 2020.

And the network - which will see 100 new stations being added - becoming even denser than places like Tokyo.

For a start, two new MRT lines will be built.

One of them, the Thomson Line will run from the heart of Marina Bay, through the Central Business District, to Woodlands in the north.

This will connect to another new line, the Eastern Region Line, which will serve residential areas like Marine Parade in the eastern part of the island.

Some existing lines will be extended. The North-South Line will go all the way to the Marina Bay area, while the East-West Line will be extended 14 kilometres into Tuas.

The new rail lines will cost the government some S$20 billion to build. This is over and above the S$20 billion the government has already committed for the on-going Boon Lay extension, the Circle Line and the Downtown Line.

However, the Transport Minister notes that while this complete picture is just 12 years away, people have been asking whether the building of the lines could take place sooner. So certain stages of the Downtown Line and Circle Line will be brought forward.

In other words... It will grow from...

1. Our Parents Generation

2. Our Generation

3. Our Children Generation

WTF are they thinking...

Add 100 freaking stations?! (More than double of current)

In future we might hear these: "Next Stop"

1 - Geyleng!
2 - Pulau Tekong!
3 - Pulau Ubin!
4 - Lim Chu Kang!
5 - Sentosa!
6 - Malaysia!
7 - Batam!

If you're interested, you can read the whole report here for the extensive list of changes...

Some interesting points...

- By 2020, people who live or work in the city and those who shop and find enjoyment there will be able to reach an MRT station within 400m on average, a mere 5-minute walk.

- We will therefore install platform screen doors at all above-ground MRT stations...before rolling this out to all stations by 2012.

- With the CCL 3, Serangoon residents will take only 25 minutes to get to Yishun by transferring to the North-South line at Bishan station, compared to 45 minutes by bus or by taking the NEL all the way to Dhoby Ghaut before transferring to the North-South line.

Immediate Benefits, Delayed Consequences

I think people are sometimes too blinded by the "immediate benefits" to notice the losses or dangers that is accompanied by that course of action.

Wow... sounds chim right...

For example, we take panadols because it can quickly reduce our pain, but we usually don't bother with the long term effects.

There are many times when we are too tempted by those visible and instant rewards, that we forget to consider the long-term implications it may bring. The pros is right in front of you, the cons is hidden behind it.

So... please, before rushing into any action, weigh everything carefully.

For my case...

The idea may sound great on paper, but who knows what else will come into the picture if we decided to bring about such a revolutionary change?

What I'm worried about the most is that they may "make great use" of this privilege given to us to take away "many many other" benefits we already enjoyed.

Anything bad happen, they'll just say "this is a choice you all made. And now you all get to enjoy it. It is only right that you blah blah blah... We also think that since this is given to you, you no longer need that..."

At least now, life is still passable. Why bring about such a great overhaul to the system? If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Better the devil you know.

Of course, it's just my personal opinion. There's no telling whether the change will be a change for the better, or a dive to eternal damnation. Just be sure to scrimp through every little detail that will come with making this all-important choice.

Past the time...

"By the time they actually pass anything, it will be past the time we need it"
- James Paulsen, strategist at Wells Capital Management (The New Paper, 20 Jan 08)

Wow.

I couldn't put it in any better terms.

In the above case, he's commenting on the US government policy.

But it applies perfectly to my current situation.

By the time they do any shit, we'll already be in deep shit.

The Legend of Kay Kingdom I

Today, I'll be retelling one of the greatest tale in the history of human civilization. It speaks of the legendary Kay Kingdom of the Ancient World. Was this legend really true? Is there such a civilization in the ancient past? No historians can prove or disprove it anymore. But will the saga of this mysterious nation be re-created in the modern world?

...

...

LEGEND OF KAY KINGDOM I - FELLOWSHIP OF THE KNIGHTS

Eons ago, possibly in the prehistoric days, there stood a majestic and powerful country, known as the "Kingdom of Kay". It's military strength were unmatched across the lands, and the nation enjoyed peace and prosperity for hundred for years.

Then, on a fateful day, the worst thing imaginable happened. The skies tore apart and a devastating earthquake shattered the lands. Demons and evil spirits descended from the skies and rose from the depths of hell, swarming across the Kay Kingdom.

War has come.

There were 3 main land routes leading into the Kay which the Imperial Army must defend. These 3 gateways are the lifeblood of Kay, and should any of them fall, so will the country.

As the war rage on throughout the entire country, there were some areas which were free from the threats. One of them was a tiny village in the outskirts of the country.

The South Pool Village

This village was essentially a stable. It rear horses, which were sometimes use as taxes to the Imperial Court to finance the war.

The villagers lived a simple life. Taking care of the horses, planting trees, playing games, making home-cook meals... life was peaceful, simple and everyone was happy. Every morning, you'll see people sweeping leaves at the pavilion, having breakfast at the local inns, children running about the wheat fields. Life was peaceful and simple, and it was heaven on earth during the war times.

The village chief was Kingfisher, who had 7 loyal protectors, known to the villagers as the "Seven Swords" (七剑) - Vulture, Raven, Cougar, Jaguar, Nighthawk, Koala and the Cannibal sword. The 7 swords assists the village chief in maintaining order in the village...

Under the Imperial orders, the village sometimes send men over to the frontlines to assist in the wars...

Everything was normal, until one day...

Chief Kingfisher received an Imperial Edict, from the Majesty himself. The edict wrote...

"The Imperial Stable is completed, and it is my wish to move the entire village to the Imperial City, where the imperial steeds can be put to better use in the war. All your people will now be known to the world as the Imperial Knights, and the 7 swords - Imperial Generals."

And thus, with promise of greater fame and fortune, Chief Kingfisher led his people to join the Imperial Army officially. From now on, they will be known as...

The Kay Knights.

What if we had chosen a different project?

This is a long post...

STOP! Don't scroll down anymore.

Take a good look at this picture.

Look very close.

For those involved...

Does this picture looks even remotely familiar to you?

You know? Like a tiny memory at the back of your head...

There should be less than 10 people in this world that have seen that picture before. Haha.

Well anyway... let's reveal the answers...

...

...

...

I was recently introduced to this website called "Viwawa".

If you break it down, it is essentially a chatroom incorporating multiplayer games.

I went in and tour a few rounds. Customizing avatars (babies), gaming lobbies... Kinda like Gunbound if you know what I mean.

So then I introduce this site to Zhi Wei. And after playing for an hour, he had the same sentiments as me...

Yep...

We had this idea before some time ago...

I thought It'll be interesting if I still have any remnants to this project. Any "remains" that were still floating around.

So, I opened my large CD wallet, wiped off the dust, flipped through and found the disc I wanted - "All Singapore Poly Documentations".

In we go...Singapore Poly\Year 3\FYP\FYP Misc Docs\Gabble

Hey wait...

WTF is this!

"FYP Proposal.doc"
"Gabble Meeting 1.doc"
"FYPSchedule.mpp"
"Logo.jpg"

Does anyone even remember what kind of a file a "mpp" extension is anymore?!

I couldn't wait. What traces of history can I find in these files? The project that "died before it even got started"...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here, I'll extract some paragraphs from the documents...

"Upon logging into the application, the user will enter a chat-room lobby. In this lobby, the users will be able to chat with other users that are logged on. From here, the user can host a variety of inbuilt games inside the application."

"To appeal to the target audience, we have decided to use cute and adorable graphics for our application."

"Upon completion of the game, the relevant scores will be uploaded into the database. Base on the player results, he can earn Gabs. We intend to include 4 games to accompany the initial launch of our product. "

"The Avatar is a character representation of the user in this virtual world. All users start with a basic default character (plain clothes). The character will have varied facial expressions and accessories to be placed on different parts of the body. The accessories will be purchased with Gabs (in-game currency)."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow... I still remembered when we were discussing this on the 5th floor staircase above Foodcourt 4. We had all sorts of crazy ideas.

Xuan Jie was so onto the networking parts. Then we were discussing what theme of avatar to use. I forgot if we eventually decided on animals or babies. I think Ben even wanted to incorporate Mahjong (!) into Gabble. And I believe we also thought about giving them special skills like those seen in Asian Gambling God movies. (BTW, these were all in Viwawa)

The artists wanted to have customizable avatars, emoticons... even download-able theme songs! The programmers wanted even more crazy stuffs. We were so ambitious at that time. ^_^

Well...

Anyway. We all knew what happened in the the end... right?

What if Edenii didn't approach us?
What if HR didn't exists at all? (Or suffered its eventual fate 1 year earlier)
What if during that first client meeting, Zhi Wei weren't mesmerize by Gerald... you know who.
I think our lecturer (was it Hubertus?) advised us to accept?
What if We didn't and continue on with Gabble?

So many unknowns...

Some predictions I'll make...

If we did Gabble, it would definitely have been born. But how good will it really be? Do we really have sufficient experience at that time? No prior experience of networking, no prior experience of database. Everything (as on the schedule) is "learn as you work". Possible?

Would we have did as well at FYP if we did Gabble?

Maybe we would have face delayed schedules, cut features, computer crashing, bugs bugs bugs, unable to get this and get that out in time. And totally screw up the whole thing.

Or perhaps we would master all the required skills and get all the features we planned out in time through our extreme perseverance and determination. And maybe it would eventually be the "Viwawa" today.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regardless of it...

I don't regret doing HR.

I don't want to go through all the stuffs about who has learn this and that again. You can re-read through that in the FYP closing document if you're bored.

But I really enjoy the times spent on HR. Especially at the end, when you see people discussing the games we created in the forums. Actually logging onto the servers and playing the games with the public. And showcasing the games at WCG!

It's unlikely that we'll ever get to sit down to play HR together again. Sad~

My Reincarnation Plan...

Finally the Decree is out. Everything is ready now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Thank you for your confirmation.

We note that you will be enrolling in your reserved programme in August 2008.

The matriculation package will be sent to you by June 2008."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's a lot of things I have to take into consideration, and calculation, weighing the pros and cons.

1st Vacation: 29 Nov 08 - 4 Jan 08 (5 Weeks)
2nd Vacation: 2 May 09 - 26 Jul 09 (12 Weeks)

I'm in quite a tough spot now. I've 2 ways to go about this.

1) Leave Earlier

A very tempting choice. I'll get about a week to get prepared for the new term, but that's secondary. The best thing about this choice is I get to get out of that **** hole early. But then, I would have already endured for more than a year, what's 2 weeks? The con is of course, I have more to pay back during the holidays.

If I take this option, most likely I wouldn't be able to pay back during the "1st Vocation", which means I have to pay back in May 09. Pretty long way. That means my actual ORD date would be same as the "Jason, Zhi Jian, Cheung Jie" batch. A very depressing thought. I might even lag behind by 1 ICT cycle...

If I force myself to go back during the "1st Vocation", it would be extremely tight. Worst, what is (touchwood) something happen and I cannot complete it within 5 weeks? Unimaginable.

2) Leave Later

A choice I'm more supportive of. Problem is I would probably be forced to go through 1 extra month of battle because of this. Biggest advantage of this choice is I'll probably owned them a maximum of 20 days. I'll treat it as going back to visit old friends (and pets). Haha.

If I go this route, I would want to return on the "1st Vocation", which is 29 Nov 08. That's very fast, barely one batch. Which means more of the old birds would still be there. Portion of Saravanan batch, and all of Wei Long/Jia Yun batch. Oldo would probably still be alive. And (sad to say) Kenny will be there as well. Not a bad deal.

Risks

As of now I still don't know how the 5 weeks and 12 weeks vacation differs. I think I'll consult my brother. If I go back during the 12 weeks it's definitely safe, and I can take my own sweet time without hurry. If I go back during the 5 weeks, who knows if there'll be tons of projects and revisions, etc for the exams...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So... which path do I take? I'm now trying to mapped out the actual date I'll get out, and the date I'll return back. Trying to see which is the best date to take for the best effect. Most importantly, I don't wan to push the limit too far. Got to leave some buffer for anything out of my control.

Feel free to give me any advice.

The Real "End Of The World"

You've probably heard it being talked about a million times, but it never happened.

But I think it's time to believe.

This is the video "The Most Terrifying Video You Have Ever Seen" which garnered more than 3 million views on Youtube alone as of this writing.

Undeniable conclusion. The world will soon face its greatest catastrophe. This video actually interests me so much that I went and really watch through almost all the expansion packs.

If you're interested to know more after watching this, yet don't have the time and effort to dig through everything in the expansion, here's a tip. Just watch "Risk Management Part 3" Onwards and "GCC".

Great Software 2 - The Ultimate Protection For Free

In the past, I was too ignorant of all the viruses, spyware and adware and trojans and worms and whatever "evil" stuffs on the internet.

I didn't use any "protection", and I paid the consequences on more than one occasion. Reformating entire hard drives, having the PC slow down to a crawl and more.

The Windows built in protection is just crap. It's like going out there trying to fight aliens using bows and arrows. It's like building your house with grass hoping the big bad wolf doesn't blow it away. On the other hand, those "professional" programs often cost too much to maintain. You spent hundred of dollars and fork out even more every year to "keep it up to date". Worse, those programs aren't even sufficient.

After so many years of experience, I've finally concluded that, not any single program is enough for your survival on the harsh internet world. You need a comprehensive and variety of the best weapons against the countless kind of enemies out there. This package I list offer the ultimate protection. If you install all of these programs and consistently update them, I can assure you that you are surrounded by the "Aura Of 9 Heavens". Nothing will ever penetrate your defenses. Best of all, they are all free!

1. Zone Alarm Firewall - This extremely popular firewall is your superb defense against programs that want to access the internet (inward and outward). Grant access only to legitimate ones and you'll have built your first line of defense.

2. Spyware Blaster - Prevention is better than cure, this free program is an ultra force field that will guard you against thousands of malicious sites and wares.

3. AVG Anti Virus - The free virus killing machine. Very effective, very responsive, very easy to maintain. It updates automatically and detects viruses as soon as it appears on your computer. This one puts Norton and MaCafee to shame.

4. Adaware 2007 - If AVG is the ultimate virus killing machine, then this one is the ultimate spyware killnig machine. Must get.

5. AVAST Anti Virus - Combine this with AVG and you got a impregnable fortress. This one scans viruses to the deepest level (even the kernel), features P2P shield, Email shields and even more shields that can detect a virus before it can even infect your computer.

6. Spybot Search & Destroy - This one is my personal favourite and I've been using it for the longest. The immunization is similar to Spyware Blaster, and its spywares killing abilities will pick off those that get pass Adaware.

Asian Celebrity Titles

This is a very interesting phenomenon (culture) that only happens in Asian countries. More specifically in Taiwan. In the western world, no matter how popular a celebrity gets, the highest "rank" he'll attain is probably a "Superstar".

But in the Asian world, we tend to give them all sorts of ranks and salutations to further personalize them. I'll name some off the top of my head... most of them should be quite well-known. For more entertainment value, I'll attempt to translate them...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you know of any more singers with other unique titles? Let me know~

Those I listed above are the "official titles" granted to those singers, what they are actually known as. But I thought it could be extremely interesting to "bestow" some really unique titles to those celebrities. One that is more fitting for them...

Here are some I manage to come up with...

[Song King of Constipation Healing] 通便歌王 - 阿杜
[Local Bird King] 本土鸟王 -
吴宗宪
[
Asia No 1 Arrogant Group] 亚洲第一"好脸"天团 - 5566
[Most Suicidal Group In History] 史上第一自杀团体 - ENERGY

This Year! This Year!

This post came a little late, but finally, now I can say "this year!" instead of "next year..."

I just passed my "Portable Document Format" first (and last) anniversary and of course my first (once again, last) year as a K-Knight.

First OD of the year with Ago. Still remembered a long long time ago, when I just came...

Ago will always hang around with Kam, and emphasizing how he's "one year... one year..."

Once, we had a gathering for the old birds to pass down their mounts. Everyone raised their hands, and then look at Ago who did the same. And Mao Mao said "2008 one later lah! 2007 turn haven't come you want to pass!"

Haha... And now it's really 2008 already. Kam is gone for over a month. Ago is leaving soon too. I still have quite a long way. After that will be Darren, then Choo, and then me!

3 more batches!

Like not very long, but a lot can happen in 3 batches time. 3 Batches ago, this place was heaven. What will happen in 3 batches time?

The Hilarious, The Amazing & The Bizarre III

A list of videos I've seen lately. Some of them may have been around for years, and others fresh from the oven...

Number 5 - The Real Pikachu... This one is sooo cute... haha. But it's strange when the sound is not coming out from that yellow mouse.

Number 4 - Zhou Chuan Xiong's trademark song... made into a shitty song... Literally.

Number 3 - This one is even better than the Buffalax Tamil song... we call this the "Indian Nipple Song".

Number 2 - Quick Change Artists. This one is freaking amazing...

Number 1 - What will your happen if your toys really come alive...

Year 2008...

"All the world's a stage, and the men and women merely players".

I'm in a movie. The longest movie in my life. Yep, "最长的电影".

The filming has been ongoing for over a year and its still going on. Looked forward to the day the film would finish and go on screen. That time, I would be the one sitting down in front of the cinema screen, watching the screening of the longest movie.

Last year, I have no goal. My goal last year in fact was just to reach this year. Perhaps that's why I'm so helpless. I have something to look forward to this year - The Olympic Games. The National Day. Yeah... Right...

I think I'll care less about whether I achieve anything and more about whether I'm enjoying what I'm doing now. I'm trying to be too perfect in certain things which isn't really important. I'll be purchasing some things to start the new year off.
