Creativity 2 - Memorize

Title: 跪记
Original: 轨迹
Lyrics: Describes the life of a diligent student studying for a subject that he simply can't understand. He stays up late every night in search of solutions for the tutorials. He tries his best to memorize and understand what the lecturer says, but it is almost always a fruitless attempt. He often fantasize about the day when he graduates...

NTU Y1S1, Week 4 In Review

Random Quotes Of The Week:

"Now that's an interesting picture...but it got nothing to do with the slide."
- Dr Leung
(On a random lecture slide)

"Now we come to the next line, which is not that important, but in fact, it is still very important."
- Dr Leung
(On a random program)

"Suppose 10 years later...you come back to the program. And you want to design a 4 dimensional cylinder."
- Dr Leung
(On polymorphism)

Dr Woo: "So is everything OK? Or is it too abstract?"
Stranger: "Your whole course is abstract lah..."
- Random Stranger (Random F-Maths Lecture)

"We are engineers, not mathematicians. We're not interested in knowing how they derive those formulas. We just need to know how to apply them."
- Dr Woo
(On proving formulas)

"TTL stands for Transistor Transistor Logic... Some students call it Totally Totally Lost."
- Dr Chan (On TTL)

"DON'T just say YES or NO. Justify the answer."
- Dr Shi (Relations Lecture, being kind of piss of)

"Never look back at what you have brought."
- Mr Ben (MSN, on items becoming cheaper)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In The Class:
Been a real busy week... lots of quotes too. The 2 maths subject are driving me to my limits. It seems like they are competing against each other to see which can confuse their audience more. Their difficulty far exceeds any other subjects at this moment...

Computer Systems
I really got nothing much to say... except that the people in the lecture room gets fewer and fewer with each passing day. I wonder if I select a SCE Year 1 student at random, what is the probability that he's going to skip this class?

Logic Design
Wah... die man. It's definitely getting tougher. For the first time I'm actually totally confuse at what the lecturer is saying. Totally Totally Lost indeed.

Discrete Maths
Justify your answer. Justify your answer. I don't want to repeat... Just read THIS.

Foundation Maths
I am really really helpless with this module. I can barely understand 5% of what the lecturer says. The mean content I can understand is 1 line out of 10 lines with a standard deviation of 1 line.

I'm going to dedicate the my entire Saturday for the 2 Maths Subject (Probably more for this). From 1pm to 1am. 12 solid hours. Minimum break. No gaming, no TV, no stupid MSN messages, no any other funny stuffs.

Data Strucutres Programming
Now, seriously. I think this whole thing is screwed up. I think I actually spent MORE time doing the report then writing the program, which is just plain wrong. The report details are vague, unclear, ambiguous and just plain confusing.

On the other hand, students will be penalize heavily for anything in the report that doesn't adhere to the format. WHAT THE CRAP?!

This is a PROGRAMMING module, not "Report Writing" module. Why do we have to undergo this kind of torture? Why do we suffer this kind of treatment?

They didn't state down clearly the basic details like what to include in the softcopy and submission, or how the marker would go about marking.

Instead, they TRY TO INSTILL fear create panic among the students by saying things like:

"The due dates are subjected to change without prior notice",
"Ensure there are no unnecessary files in your folder",
"Any duplicate submission after receiving your first copy will be treated as Recycle Paper", "Each line should NOT be more than 80 characters",
"Each indentation should be 4 spaces wide only"
"You could get 3 marks reduction from each of the above non-ideal format".

I completed the program in 2 days, but I spent 5 days worrying about the report. WHAT A SHITLOAD OF CRAP.

How To Declare Your Love For Someone...Discretely.

My love for you is reflexive, because when I'm loving you, I'm loving myself too.

My love for you is symmetric, because I know If I love you, you'll love me too.

My love for you is antisymmetric, because If I love you and you love me, we are one.

My love for you is transitive, because If I love you and you love another, I'll love the one you love as well.

My love for you defies all the laws of nature. It defies the commutative laws, the associative laws, the distributive laws, the absorption laws, the domination laws, the Idempotent laws, the double complement laws, the identity laws and even the great De Morgan's law.

All the elements in my set are the subsets of my love for you. When I am a subset of you and you are a subset of mine, I know we are equal to each other. There are no difference nor complement in our world, only union and intersection. We are dependent yet not mutually exclusive. Our Cartesian product symbolize all the good things in this world.

My love for you is a Tautology, never a Contradiction.

My love for you transcends all time and events on earth...

My love for you is Eternal...

...

Eternally Discrete.

NTU Y1S1, Week 3 In Review

Random Quotes Of The Week:

Dr Shi: "(Draw 2 circles. Dot Dot Dot Dot Dot with marker)"
Dr Shi: "So! Is A inside A plus B?!"
Half The Class: "Yes..."
Half The Class: "No..."
Dr Shi: "Oh! COME ON! (It can't be that difficult!)"
-Dr Shi (On Sets)

"You cannot say, A'B + B'A is equal to 1. It's not."
"No boolean theorems is going to support you, OK?"
- Dr Chan (On boolean equation simplification)

(After a long while)
Me: Are you trying to waste my time?
Ben: no...
(After an even longer while)
Ben: oh ya nvm don't hav to trouble u to bring le.
Ben: lol.
Ben: thx alot by the way !
Me: ...............
Me: I WAS RIGHT
Me: damn it
Ben: ...
Ben: right abt wad
Me: u are trying to waste my time
- Me (On MSN)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In The Class:
Statistics have shown that this course holds the record for having the highest number of drop-outs (especially in year1)... now I understand why... -_-

Computer Systems

Nothing much to comment, not my main worry at this time. As I am writing this, I am reminded of Ho Chee Meng... My eyes!

Data Strucutres Programming
First lab is over! I think they're testing more on how good your maths is rather than your programming... Wrapping up the final program as of this writing... not my main worry at this time.

Logic Design
Minterms, Maxterms, and the "initially seems extremely complicated but not really" Karnaugh Map. Basically this whole week is learning about the K-Map. It's getting tough, but it's not my worry at this time.

Discrete Maths

Just when I thought I've finally mastered the secret behind the "logical reasoning of Ps and Qs", they have to bring in the sets. I don't have to elaborate much. Just look at the questions...

1) If "x is in A or B but not A and B, then is x in A plus B plus B?"

2) Prove that if "x is in A and not B, and not in (B-C), then x is in A and not B"

I really is buay tahan... -_-'

Foundation Maths
Wah Lau...Probably for the first time in my life, I sit through a lecture without understanding a slightest idea of what the lecturer is talking about.

He just goes on and on and on...

With each lecture, the amount of material I understand decreases rapidly. During the first week, I can catch about 90% of what he said. 2nd week, about 60%. Now, I can barely understand 10%...

So many damn laws, so many formulas, so many distributions, so many variables... this is driving me nuts. I now place the difficulty of this module above Discrete Maths.

Yep. I rather do the "Ps and Qs" then do this module. That is how bad this module is.

This Is Java - This Is War!

I've been programming for a total of nearly 6 hours today! High~~~~!

...

Today is the first Java Practical Lab, and with that comes the inevitable first "assignment". Been ages since I've been this "high"...

They say it's useless to talk of war on paper (纸上谈兵), they say "walking a thousand miles is better than reading a thousand books" (读万卷书,不如行万里路), and they say action speaks louder than words.

Java is very much like that. What's the use of attending lectures after lectures after lectures? What's the use of knowing how "mySpouse" divorce "hisSpouse"? I can learn much more in 1 practical than 10 lectures. Well, at least for now.

...

Been very long since I did such "hardcore programming" already... I don't know how much of my "Java Powerzzz" remains... Haha.

If I had retained 80% of what I knew when I did "Bluff", I would have no problem clearing this lab.

Unfortunately...

I am now constantly greeted with red text...

Yep... crimson red text.

Bloody red text.

They are the blood that spill from my fingers...

THIS IS WAR!

Johnny's Farewell Dinner...

Took some time to off to attend this "special" mini-gathering yesterday. I is give Jonathan face then I go hor... not the organizer. :P

Had the dinner at Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe. The food's not bad and the price is reasonable, but the service (17%) is kind of ridiculous.

Attended mostly by our batch - Charleston, Anthony, Jonathan, Benjamin, WQ, JS, YP, WH and myself.

TCSS session. Topics include...

- How things are going back at the Kindergarten.
- The newcomers, especially the "Little Red Rider" (said to be the child of the "Hairy Ghost" and "Red Dragon").
- How the Kindergarten management is going to change entirely.
- Catch up what everyone is doing since our last meeting (do work one do work, study one study loh)

Actually Johnny got a place in NTU, but he decided to go overseas in the end for a course he likes better. Haha...

Might be quite a while before I'll see him again.

Wish him all the best~ Maybe he'll bring an "angmoh" GF when he comes back. LOL.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Little Update

Wooo... I've gotten a "bike" haha. Bicycle lah.

Actually I should have gotten one earlier, but never thought of it. At least now I can ride back and forth to the train station, and that should cut off at least 5 minutes of traveling time everyday. Another major benefit is I don't have to endure the blazing hot sun when I walk home from the station in the afternoon...

...

Been "chionging" the tutorials... not p not q, not q not p... -_-

Sometimes, I find the notes really sucky. They don't explain much to you at all. They just give you the formula and expect you to use it, especially the Foundation Maths.

Most of the time, I feel that I can do the questions better when I solve them using my own method. Instead of just copying the formula and filling in all the corresponding values , I actually think it's easier to use a "step by step" approach.

It's going to be slower most of the time, but at least I know what the hell I'm doing. I can find the value of P, the Q, then R, and I know what each value stand for.

If I just use the formula R = (ABC x CBA + CCB), I don't even know what it's trying to achieve.

NTU Y1S1, Week 2 In Review

Random Quotes Of The Week:

"In discrete Maths, you must think. But, don't think too much."
-Dr Shi
(Random opening)

" To exhaust all possibilites before you exhaust yourself!"
-Dr Shi
(Proving quantification)

"How do you detect error?"
"You send the same data twice."
"What's an even better method than that?"
"You send the data many many times."
- Random exchange in Computer System Lecture

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wah... quite a busy week. 2nd week only, and I'm beginning to feel the kick liao... Here are some things I did...

1) Signed up for OCBC Securities... Plan for the future.
2) Signed up for NTU OCBC Debit. My first card woohoo.
3) Participate in the Library Quiz! (Got a Razer Wrist Pad... waiting for the grand draw!)
4) Got my Lappy! (More on this next time)
5) Got a Printer (Bundle) to replace my "Cui" Printer...

Actually wanted to sign the Singtel plan one... but too many people, in the end missed the queue cut. Decided not to join any CCA cause not staying in hostel. Too much commitment in the late afternoon.

Went to a KBox + Pool Session... cannot make it le lah. I realized I've been separated from the Chinese Pop Music for extremely long. A lot of new songs they pick... I've never even heard them before. Haven't tune in to 933 for ages.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In The Class:
The modules I'm taking is a huge cluster of spiderwebs. Each module is linked to another, and I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. Ironically, Data Structures (supposedly the focus of the course) seems to be in its own little world, isolated from the rest.

Computer Systems

How to convert binary to octal, octal to decimal, decimal to hexadecimal, and conversely. LOL.

Wasted $6 to print the notes cause now they got new version. So far so good except for some stupid Mantissa thingy... why do they have to makes thing so complicated?

Data Strucutres Programming
Divorce, Married, Insider, Outsider, Stargate, Starwars...

Nothing new so far, though I did picked up a few ideas (and No. Not about Stargate). Eagerly waiting for the lab to start.

Logic Design
AND gate, OR gate, NOT gate, Colgate ... the dozen of laws to combine them. Circuit logic, active levels, puzzle bubble (alternate symbols), standard operating procedures sum of product and product of sum...

Sure is getting a bit tough, but it's still quite manageable.

Foundation Maths

Mean, Standard Deviation, Permutations, Combinations, Probabilities... Monty Hall Paradox, Birthday Paradox, Gambler Paradox...

Wah Lau... really cannot make it. Have to ask some "A Levels Pro" for guidance, but he always give me attitude.

Discrete Maths
Proposition, Inference, Arguments, Modus Ponens, Modus Tollens, Disjunctive Syllogism (Are these biological terms?)... WTF?!

Wah Lau... is not say I want to complain... but this module is driving me crazy.

It is suppose to teach you to how do "reasoning and logic", but the whole thing hardly has any logic!

Let me show you a sample question of this so called "Logic & Reasoning".

Sample Question:
- If Joseph don't love Cloud, then Ben love Cloud only if Edwin don't love Jansen.
- (Edwin love Cloud or Edwin love Jansen) AND (Edwin don't love Cloud or Ben love Cloud) is true.
- Jackie don't love Joseph.
- Edwin don't love Jansen is a necssary condition for Ben to love Cloud.
- Joseph Love Cloud is a sufficient condition for Jackie to love Joseph.

By using logical inference and equivalence rules, prove whether the conclusion "Ben love Cloud IF AND ONLY IF Edwin love Jansen" is valid.

Simi Jumbo?!

CAN YOU EVEN MAKE ANY SENSE OUT OF THIS WHOLE THING?

This is 10 times more complicated than ANY kind of triangular or rectangular or octagonal relations you can find in those Mediacorp Dramas.

WTF to INFINITY.

A Discrete Message...

Imagine...

Just picture this.

One day, you received a SMS from one of your friend. Basically, he wants to go out, but he'll only go out when certain conditions are met.

Here is the SMS you got:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hi, buddy! It will rain or it will be sunny. If I am happy, I will go swimming. If it's not sunny, then I will not play tennis. It will be sunny or I will not go swimming. It will not be sunny. Oh Sorry, if it rains and I am not happy, then I will stay home. I will watch TV or I will play tennis. Hmm... therefore, I decide to stay home and watch TV."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, can you conclude that what he say is correct?

...

...

Don't understand?

...

...

...

Don't need to think so much.

Whack liao.

Planning Own TimeTable

Ahh... this is a "challenging" and "exciting" experience, especially for the freshies. Fortunately, my buddy introduced this to me early and I've now managed to save a few hours every week for this current semester.

So, I'll offer a little advice for the future generation (even though I'm a total new bird myself). Note that this guide is for people that don't want to "pon" any lessons. If you're looking to pon, please look at the separate guide I've provided below.

Important: This guide may not be too relevant for those staying in camp...us.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To Save As Much Time As Possible While Attending ALL Lessons

1) Lecture timing can't be changed (usually), so your earliest and latest lecture will be the start and end of your day. You goal is to pack all the labs and tutorials (LT) WITHIN the lectures.

2) If there are LT before or after the lectures, look for long breaks in between lessons, and stuff as much LT as you can into them.

3) Remember to save a 1hr break near midday for your lunch though... unless you think you can "tahan" 9:30 lesson to 4:30 at one shot.

For me, I like to "start early, end early", and I don't' mind waking up early - so I tried to move tutorials from late noon to the morning. This is depend on your personal preference lah... some people like to sleep till late late.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To Pon As Much As Possible While Still Attending Most Lessons

1) First, decide what's the minimum hours of lesson for you to "not pon".

2) Look for the days which has the least number of hours of lectures. These are the days you can pon.

3) Shift all your Labs/Tutorials (LT) to the days with the most number of lectures.

If you're successful, you have now successfuly "packed" your LTs into 3 or 4 days. You can now pon the other days without LTs.

Now, You can tell everyone you're just attending school 3/4 out of 7 days a week!

1st Week Of School!

1 week of school liao lo...

Gradually putting my past behind me and adopting to this new life. It's great to be a student again! I think it's the best "occupation" in this world. Well, at least it's much better than a certain occupation that also starts with 's'.

Met a lot of 老朋友 (Glenn, XJ, Ben) and made a few new friends. Glad to see Guan Wei again! I thought he was joking when he said he wanted to transfer from NUS Computing to NTU CompSci, but he wasn't. Haha. Really happy to see him again!

As for school work, there are some "concerned" (aka "kaypo") people who've asked me about it. Well... first week only, it's still very "honeymoon" stage lah. Everyday lessons add together is like 4 hours or less (no tutorials, no labs for first week). Everyday go there like walk in the park... next week will be the "real thing" though.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Poly VS A Levels
I'm suffering from slight headaches already though, especially when it comes to lectures that I don't understand. The lecturers don't really stop to explain much, and some things can be really hard to grasp when you encounter them the first time I feel. And It doesn't help much that Maths is one of my weaker subjects.

Which is why it's so unfair to Poly Students. We've been away from Maths for like... what? FIVE YEARS? A Level students know the more "chim" maths and at most they were separated from it for 2 years. Personally, I think the 2 Maths module I'm taking are very difficult lor...

Don't believe? The ONLY way you get can exempted from the module is either...

1) A Diploma in "Engineering Mathematics" or
2) 3As in relevant A Level Maths Subjects

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Week In Review

Foundation Maths - Simpson Paradox, Monty Hall Paradox, more paradoxes... Interesting. Actually, it's Probability and Statistics...

Discrete Maths - If p is true and q is true, then pq is true. p imples q means not p implies not q. If not p and not q equal not p or q then... WTF... @%#$@!#^@

Logic Design - Almost the same poo as Discrete Maths, just slightly better cause I don't have to deal with insane symbols and "implies" thingy...

Data Structures Programming - So far still nothing new... it's like seeing an old old friend... Haha.

Computer Systems - I think very lucky that got this module... cause I can use the extra time for the other modules. The only interesting lecture so far is the one where he played a video on the history of computers...

Creativity 1 - Lecture What?

Title: Lecture什么
Original: 黑色幽默

Lyrics: Describes the emotion of a student in a lecture hall, but don't understand what the lecturer is talking about...

A Scenario From Class Today...

Lecturer explains...

"So let's go through the steps 1 by 1...

Now, the first thing I do here is to change A to A + 1. A is the same as A + 1, just that we're not writing it there. I'm writing it there so that I can insert additional variables, and then manipulate...

So... 1?

How I obtain 1?

1 can be obtain from B + B'. Okay?

......

So of course you may ask 'how do I know I have to put B + B' there', well...

Uh... you...

You know because you know you have to do that in order to get to here (*underline the answer)

Okay? Haha... Alright...

(*Whole Class Stun)

Haha... alright? So you just have to do that to get to there alright...

When you have to prove something you have to prove something."

First Day Of School...

Hmm... 2 words for ya. "Very Slack".

Haha... actually never do much. First lesson started at 1130... so I really took my time for this one. Saw Guan Wei and of course my Poly Friends! To think 3 years later, we still have the chance to sit inside the same lecture room together... Sob... sob... (overcome with emotions)

... humph... anyway, it's just a bit of introductory lecture, then lunchtime. Went to collection our Matriculation Card! (YEAH! Cheaper movies from now on! Think got Student Meal also! Wooooo!)

Went to have lunch, then walk around the campus (from North Spline to South Spline until we reach the Arts & Social College... -_-

Went to explore the bookstore, computer store... then it's time for the afternoon lecture. Also very relaxing... basically some introduction and we were showed something interesting known as the "Simpson Paradox".

To keep it simple, it basically tell you that some things are not as simple as it looks. If A1 is better than B1, and A2 is better than B2, (A1 + A2) is not necessary better than (B1 + B2). And people can use this as statistics to lie. Something like that lah. Haha.

And that concludes the day. Of course, this is just the "intro" week so that's why it's so slack. No former lessons yet...

Every monday from now onwards are going to be quite bad for me I think. It's a "Mad Maths Monday", because I have lots and lots of maths classes on monday! Everything is MATHS! I shall name this as the "3M phenomenon" if I develop Monday Blues.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is something "interesting" I saw on Benjya Blog... translated it into English. I shall name it as the "Identification Law of Undergraduate Year". The Law helps you correctly deduce the year of the undergraduate simply from their behaviour.

1) Law of Sleeping

Year 1 - After lights out, goes to bed.
Year 2 - After lights out, doesn't go to bed.
Year 3 - During classes, use the table as his bed.
Year 4 - During classes, still sleeping in his bed.

2) Law of Attending Class

Year 1 - "Why are you late?"
Year 2 - "Why didn't you go to class today?"
Year 3 - "Did you go to class today?"
Year 4 - "Why you go class today?"

3) Law of Exams

Year 1 - "What? We're having a Calculus test next week?"
Year 2 - "What? We're having a Calculus test tomorrow?"
Year 3 - "What? We're having a Calculus test later?"
Year 4 - "What? The test we did just now was Calculus?'

Mad Maths...

So, I've been messing around with their "academic online system" (aka "Edventure") for the past few days and...

Well, it bears an uncanny resemblance to Singapore Poly "blackboard"... heck, it's basically THE SAME THING! It's probably just like a new version with some new features...

Anyway, I'm just doing the preparation stuffs... Like customizing the layout, deleting those unnecessary tabs, adding people to my "friends list" and of course...

Browsing through the course materials.

...

My first semester is going to be pretty crazy I think. Ignoring the fact that I've been away from school for so long, it's basically "2 semesters clumped into 1 due to the module exemptions". That should still be manageable... but guess what?

There are 2 maths modules...

...

OK... nevermind. Calm down... calm down... Let's take a look at what it is...

So I manged to find the "Module Overview" for the 2 maths module I'll be taking and...

The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor

Participants: Jansen (Rare Guest), Yao Peng, Edwin, Benjamin, Wei Long, Jia Yun, Edmund, Kenny, Samuel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plot Summary: A group of Chinese soldiers organization are seeking the "Potion of Immortality" to revive the dead Emperor and rule over the world... Who can stop him?

If you look at the trailer, it's like watching 10 different movies "rojak" together. It goes from the Asian to the Western world, from the ancient to modern age, from swords to guns, from the land to the skies.

It's not until you see the movie itself that you finally see how they can mange to piece such radically different things together. Still, I have to say that the storyline is quite ridiculous and overly-exaggerated. The Mandarin they speak (except for Jet Li) are also too "robotic" and "westernize" for my liking.

If you can ignore that, this is really not a bad movie. And if you like to watch huge explosions, magical spells, giant mythical creatures and some epic battle scenes, this is the movie for you!

Almost everything of about it is BIG scale and massive, especially when you watch it in the cinema. The Snow Avalanche and the chase on the Shanghai streets are the best parts of this movie in my opinion.

If you want to enjoy this movie, then don't read into the plot too deeply. Don't think about why she didn't do this or why he don't do that. (E.G Why don' the Emperor just transform into a dragon and burn them all in the final battle)

Just sit back, relax and enjoy the CGI, spectacular special effects and massive scale of the movie.

Rating: 3.5 / 5
(Ignore the Story, Enjoy The Action)
