Agri-Cola!

9th July / 10 July 2009

17. Agricola ( 5 / 5 )

When we were first introduced to this game, I didn't think too much of it. It seems overly complicated and isn't worth the effort to learn.

And I was dead wrong. This game is incredible.

It took a while to learn... but after our first game, we all wanted to play it again. So, we went back the following day again just to play it!

This is the highest rated board game on Board Game Geek out of like 30,000 board games (as of this writing), and it definitely live up to its name.

In Argicola, you played a farmer and a wife. From here, you have to rear animals, sow fields, harvest grains, grow your family, feed your family, renovate the huts, breed the cattles, etc... All the while, you have to manage your workers carefully and feed them well...

Sounds like Harvest Moon? Well, kinda.

It is a economic management strategy game that appears to be very straightforward, but have extremely DEEP UNDERLYING mechanisms behind it. Every move you make, every occupation you play, every improvement you make to your house will have deep and long-lasting impact on how you make your further moves. You will have to compete with your opponents for resources, actions, try to restrict his growth or advanced your own.

I simply love this game.

Tried the Basic Version on the 1st play, played the Advanced one on the 2nd day (which is much more strategic and fun)...

Even though it's not flawless, I just have to give it a 5 for its incredible gameplay, concept and innovation.

ALL HAIL AGRICOLA!
