3 Idiots

Dedicated To My FYP Supervisor

This post is dedicated to my FYP Supervisor.

Being able to work on this project is the best thing that happened to me in my university academic life.

It is, to the best of my knowledge, one of the most "fulfilling yet and un-troubling" project.

I am truly undeserving of what you've given me.

Thank you so much.

I will definitely direct all future juniors choosing their FYP here.

Projects here have my *official seal of approval*.

First Paper, Last Paper

30 months ago... I sat for my first paper in NTU... and it was a nightmare...

30 months later... I sat for my final paper in NTU... and probably the last of my academic life...

And I got pwned again...

The Final Battle

Finally, in a few weeks time, everything will be over.

Conquered 18 years of the Singapore Education System.

The final battle.

"Sons of Singapore! Of NTU! My Brothers!!!"

I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me!

A day may come when the courage of man fails, when we forsake our studies and break all bonds of fellowship.

But it is not this day.

An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the exams comes crashing down!

But it is not this day!

This day we fight!!!

By all that you hold dear on your audit, I bid you stand - Men, of the West!!!

Chasing A Dying Dream

There was a time when my greatest dream was to enter the game industry.

When I graduated from SP, I really thought I could do that.

That I could do something that I really love in my life.

Something that I enjoy since I was 4 years old.

I dream that one day, I can make games as inspiring and addictive as the greatest game designers of our time - Will Wright, Shigeru Miyamoto, Peter Molyneux and Sid Meiers...

I dream that one day, I'll be able to create an RPG franchise that would surpass Final Fantasy.

A city builder that will be greater than Sim City,

An adventure game even more epic than Zelda!

...

Then again, dreams are dreams.

The 2 years of NS have eroded that dream.

And 3 years of university have killed it.

I remember a time when I LOVE programming.

I remember a time when I was given an assignment, I would do way beyond what was required, just because I enjoyed it.

I remember a time when projects were fun.

Now, everything, I just want to "get it over" and done with.

I don't know why I'm here anymore

I don't know what happened.

Where did the passion go?

Maybe it's because I've come to the realization that I don't really have sufficient ability.

I don't have to ability to do all these.

Seeing the logs and cos make my head spin.

The word "trigonometry" makes me cringe in fear.

Weird greek symbols makes me shiver and tremble.

Interest and passion can only take you so far.

And now, the time has come for me to make a decision.

One that will decide what I will be doing for my last 6 months as a student.

And, perhaps what I'll be doing for the next 5 years, or 10 years of my life.

Do I really want to continue doing this?

Maybe it's time I try something different.

Maybe I should try experiencing a new environment.

And maybe I'll have a better idea what I want in the end.

Time to wake up?

Finally, Some Coding...

We have Imperative Programming, Functional Programming, Logic Programming...

...

And of course my favourite Object Oriented Programming (OOP).

...

But have you heard of Agent Oriented Programming?

Objects are essentially passive in nature. They have no choice as to whether or not they interact, and are simply invoked by other objects to perform particular tasks or functionality.

By contrast, agents have the ability to decide for themselves whether to participate in computational activity, and whether to perform the desired operation.

Suddenly, we are intentionally designing programs that might disobey our orders.

What is this world coming to? =.=

Yes, "objects" are supposed to have feelings. They can choose to lie or be truthful, to promise or decline. They start to have beliefs, values, commitments and choices.

Yep.

Using my Degree in Psychology, I'm gonna try to inject a little bit of "humanity" into these guys.

I Wanna Get Out Of Here!

Even for just a while.

Even for just 2 weeks.

Am I Taking A Course In Psychology?

Sometimes I feel that I'm doing a psychology major.

Yeah.

I've switched course.

I've quit Computing.

...

...

Constantly reading papers after papers about all those dumb psychology models and theories...

How it affecting human behavior, the process of human thoughts, cognitive reasoning, how people accept/reject ideas, how to do effective persuasion... the list goes on.

...

"Companies use persuasion in the form of advertising to convince consumers to buy their products or services. Students use persuasion to convince their parents to increase their allowance, or let them go to see a particular movie, or to let them use the car. Parents can use persuasion to get their children to study or to clean up their rooms. People use persuasion to get their friends to go to see a certain movie, or a band, or to hang out at the mall. Persuasion can convince another person to go out on a date. It can convince a teacher to accept a paper after the due date."

"Of course, people can also use threats to get what they want, but that is not persuasion. In persuasion, we try to convince the audience that they should want to do what we want them to do--not that they should do it “or else.”"

"The next wave in Web site design is persuasive design, designing for persuasion, emotion, and trust. While usability is still a fundamental requirement for effective Web site design, it is no longer enough.” "

"We are fundamentally lazy. As a result, products that require people to learn new things routinely fail. Instead, to increase a user’s ability, designers of persuasive experiences must make the behavior easier to do. In other words, persuasive design relies heavily on the power of simplicity."

"Consider, for example, how Facebook motivates new users to upload profile pictures. This feature of Facebook, like many other features, has persuaded millions of people to take action. That means millions of people have all had sufficient motivation and ability, and then Facebook has triggered these people to perform this behavior. This type of analysis could be the basis for a longer paper..."

As you can see, everything is a load of BS.

And now I have to write some stupid paper on this.

The last thing I saw before my sleep is the Word Document file.
The first thing I saw after my sleep is still the Word Document file.

How can I see life?!?!

FYP or IA?

I'm at yet another crossroad in my life...

ZZZ

FYP First

1) Please take note that each FYP spans 2 semesters and the vacation break in between. You are expected to work full time on the FYP during the vacation, especially when the progress of your FYP is deemed to be slow or unsatisfactory. For students starting FYPs in August, you are advised (though not mandatory) to start working on your FYP right from July since the December break between the 2 semesters is very short.  This could be an important factor of your FYP grade, or even a pass or fail situation for some.

2) I seriously have no idea what to pick out of the hundreds of FYPs available. I couldn't even pick 3, let alone 15.

3) No idea in mind what to take for Year 4 Modules... -.-

* To be fair, it's not like Point 2 or 3 will be solved if I take IA first.

IA First

1) If I pick IA first, I'll be "all alone" during the last semester... :(

2) Registration starts AFTER FYP registration ends. So it's a very big unknown also. Can't even see the list of companies.

3) Cultivate interest by doing IA first?

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

FED UP!

(Wah this is a very good & easy song to "Kuso"...)

Alpha Game

Rules

Let's play a game. In this game, there are several wallets in front of you. Each wallet contains bills of differing values. You have to pick one wallet to hand to your enemy. Your enemy, in turn, has to pick one of that wallet's bills to hand back to you.

Strategy

Your enemy will always hand you the smallest bill that she can, so you should hand her the wallet with the largest smallest bill. In fact, to you, each wallet is worth only as much as its smallest bill. The question is: to find the wallet with the largest smallest bill, do you have to look through every wallet, at every single bill?

The answer is: no. Look at each of the first wallet's bills. Remember the value of the smallest bill - call this value alpha. Alpha represents the value of the largest smallest bill that you've seen so far. Put the first wallet in your pocket.

Start looking through the second wallet. If you see a bill valued less than alpha: immediately throw that second wallet in the trash. Otherwise: throw the first wallet in the trash, set alpha to the value of the second wallet's smallest bill, and put the second wallet in your pocket. Repeat this paragraph for each remaining wallet.

At the end of this process, the best wallet is in your pocket and the rest of the wallets are in the trash. Take the wallet out of your pocket and hand it to your enemy. Be sure that she'll hand the bill valued alpha back to you.

Author Note

After wrecking my brains for HOURS and HOURS, I was finally ENLIGHTENED by these few simple paragraphs! Hold My Dog!
